New mugs: fun shapes, leaf designs

Image
I had fun throwing these new mug shapes: I decided to use leaf shapes on them...waking up with the the idea for the design one morning. I traced leaves I carefully selected during a fall walk in my neighborhood:  I decided to wax the lines to show the design: Glazing took more time and effort than I expected...as was typical, I layered 2 glazes to make each of the two colors I chose to use...hoping to get a green and a creamy color. Below is the final product. The creamy color came out as light blue, but I still like them a lot. I am keeping one and selling two. Here are some other new mugs recently made:

Group pinch pot classes (away from my studio)

Image
Mud-itation (a mindfulness practice using clay) I offered this as two classes at Open Spirit in Framingham (8/18, 7 attended) and Five Crows in Natick (8/13, 6 attended). I was happy to be able to share my passion for pottery with more folks. At the beginning of each class, students shared their expectations/hopes to:  experience a new way to clear the mind and be present have a creative experience learning something new make a bowl/container explore creative side learn/try something new (totally out of "my comfort zone") do something for fun & creative "just for me" (instead of for their children) enjoy peace & quiet "from my child" "clear out my brain" clear mind if even for a few minutes relax have fun meet new people At the end of the class, they shared that it met their expectations, and one student shared that she was in a better mood.  Here are pictures of the sample bowls (that I made before the class)... ...and the students wor...

My name and pronouns change

Image
I changed my name to Diana (from Debra) in March this year...and my pronouns (from she/her) to they/them and/or per/pers ...and I like non gendered relational words, ie. person/sibling/friend, used for me. I welcome questions about any of this.

Masked Makers

Image
Some of my students are back to classes (yay!) where we mostly wear masks and use the air purifier while we are together. Generally we can ignore our masks and still find ways to be creative and find joy working with mud, tools, and glaze.  Here is Elaine measuring with calipers to try to make a lid for a pitcher (for her parents' teapot; the original lid broke). Eri Joanna is back! Last here as a student in Sept. 2017. Olga is shown here (and in 2 video clips) trying out doing a thinned glaze application on the wheel: This is Olga (unmasked, so before the Pandemic) experimenting with using paper as a mask to build different levels with slip, then removing the paper before firing.  I appreciate how Olga tries out new techniques.

Some Pottery for Sale

Image
I am integrating my racial justice activism with my craft (pottery) now = craftivism  ( about my craftivism ... some finished work here ). All proceeds from sales of my pottery (and pottery classes) will be donated during the Pandemic to mutual aid groups in the Boston area, and other organizations helping folks who are struggling with food insecurity and more, due to the Pandemic. Video of throwing demos and explaining compassion/donations. I am working on adding more pieces and prices to this blog (I removed many sold things...or things at Five Crows ...as of Dec. 2021, and 8/16/22) For now, assume price range of $15-40 each if not otherwise noted.   Things that are pictured together do not need to be sold as a set unless that is noted; the numbers are just noted for communication purposes.   All are food safe and dishwasher safe. And lovingly hand-crafted. Copper Hinged Container (#7) Tree Cup Lid on Individual Pitcher (#8) " I love you " in morse code...plan...
